About
FUTURE BRH VISION
The Future BRH vision is to develop innovative technologies for high-value manufacturing to sustainably produce pharmaceuticals, chemicals, materials and advanced synthetic fuels.
4 KEY SECTORS
The EPSRC/BBSRC funded Future Biomanufacturing Research Hub is a national biomanufacturing accelerator, coordinating UK academic, HVM catapult, and industrial capabilities to enable the complete biomanufacturing innovation pipeline.
Future BRH is developing new underpinning technologies based on industrial biotechnology (IB) to enable efficient, sustainable and innovative bio-based manufacturing in four key sectors:
- PHARMACEUTICALS
- VALUE-ADDED CHEMICALS
- ENGINEERING MATERIALS
- ADVANCED SYNTHETIC FUELS

BIO-BASED ECONOMY
As set out in the UK Bioeconomy Strategy published in 2018, the bioeconomy represents the economic potential of harnessing the power of bioscience, using renewable biological resources to replace fossil resources in innovative products, processes and services.
The aims of Future BRH are to accelerate the delivery of economically attractive, robust and scalable biomanufacturing processes to meet societal and commercial demand through industrial partnerships and co-created research programmes.
Future BRH is generating novel microbial production routes, supported by in silico design tools, automation, and state-of-the-art analytics with advanced data handling that allow accurate high throughput verification of products and processes. It is taking a leading role in further developing these technologies, supporting clean growth by connecting innovation in industrial biotechnology to the UK manufacturing base to deliver drop-in solutions and new sustainable processes to industry, whilst providing training and skills to support a transition to a bio-based economy.
CLEAN GROWTH
The long-term vision of the Future Biomanufacturing Research Hub is for a paradigm shift from petrochemical based processes to safer, cleaner and greener bio-based manufacturing routes, enabling UK manufacturing to be at the global forefront of Clean Growth.
THE TEAM AND PARTNERS
Future BRH aims to be an internationally unique UK asset, with a concentration of Hub expertise, a highly appropriate network of complementary spoke partners and close industrial collaborations.
